Drift Strategy

I had no strategy at all going into my drift walk. I just wanted to walk around the city at night and try to stay in areas that I thought were safe. I started my walk in Sandburg Hall at 12:00 AM on the morning of October 2nd. I decided to head south on my walk and that ended up being the general direction I headed throughout. Bus route 15 passed me by a couple of times while I was walking so I decided to get on it on the corner of N Farwell and E Brady. I only took it for about 8 minutes than got off on some street that later turned out to be Juneau Ave. From there I decided to cross the river than turn into a busier part of downtown. Again, I did not plan where I was going but rather stayed in areas that I deemed safe. I ended up on 1st and National at about 5:00 AM. From there I took the bus back to campus.

Bike over Bridge

Time: 12:34 AM
Location: Locust Street on the bridge over the Milwaukee river.

I was walking over the Milwaukee river listening to the cars as they passed by. I decided to capture the sound of the transfer of the cars from the ground to the bridge. As I was recording, a bicycle rode by which added depth to this recording. There were a surprising amount of cars going by at this time in the night but they all added to this sound.

Flight for life

Tme: 2:34 AM
Location: On North Old World Old Street between West Kilbourn Avenue and West Wells Street.

I was half way in an alley trying to record sounds of some people walking home from bars. I was about to pack up and keep on walking when I heard a helicopter flying by. That helicopter turned out to be the Flight for Life helicopter and the recording ended up landing a spot in the top 5 sounds of my drift.

Under the bridge

Time: 3:23 AM
Location: North Water Street under Highway 794

It's very early in the morning and some people are just leaving the Lady Bug Club which is just north of my location. There are 5 guys and 4 girls in this group walking by. As that group passes, another group of girls is coming from the south. I had the mics on my hips, one on each side. A couple of cars passed by which ads to the depth of this recording.

Keys in the Night

Time: 1:14 AM
Location: On Oakland Avenue between N. Cambridge Avenue and East Kane Pl.

The wind was blowing hard enough move leaves around so I decided to capture that sound. Later on, a man with some keys in his pocket started walking by. As soon as he started walking by, some cars passed by and some people walked out onto their porch. All of these sounds add depth to this recording which is my favorite out of the five posted in this blog.

Hanging mics in a Bridge

Time: 1:47 AM
Location: East Juneau Avenue on the bridge over the Milwaukee River

I was walking over the bridge when I noticed I could put my mics through the grates that the cars passed over the bridge on. I put both mics through those grates and let them hang about 2 feet below the bridge. This led to a very low rumble sound which you can hear and almost feel.
